Frustrated Husband, Loving Father
The Chinese couple moved in to the second floor few years back. Their house was the only apartment on that level. With extra partition outside for their son's tricycle, swing, their protective dog who bark at everyone it sees and their hanged clothes. It was a perfect home for a new parent who wanted to live happily with each other.
The couple used to have a maid when they had their first child, a boy. I used to see her on high chairs wiping the windows outside. But then, they didn't employ her for long. Soon, the woman gave birth to their second son just when their first son is around 3-4. The woman never talks to anyone. Even when I smile, I had to smile from ear to ear before she gave me her reluctant "can't be bothered" smile. The man can be friendly at times, he talks, he waved 'Hi". But always avoid long conversation. We know, young couples wants a world for themselves and some hate to be friendly to neighbours so as to avoid spilling any secrets.
Ever since their second child is born, the couple always had quarrels with each other. I always hear the woman shouting and screaming at her husband and their first son. Doors were slammed, cries were heard. I felt sorry for the man. He was like the mom and the dad. He took his son out for breakfast, to the MacDonald, to the playgroup centres and out to play. I never seen his wife took care of the kids before. Some women do not want to dirty their manicured nails. But the man still smiles even if he knew, that we heard their quarrels.
One night, my husband and I was spending some time together at the park below. Watching old couples active in Gate ball. Then we saw the wife, rushing down the stairs carrying her 2ND son, and a rocker..with their first son tagging behind. Then the man came down with a storage box full of his son's clothes and toys. I wondered if she was angry with her husband, wanting to go back to her maiden home. Since its their usual routine to quarrel, we ignore. Then the man called out to me, asking me to come up to his house. He waved at my husband, meaning 'hold on'. When I got up, he ask if I want to have the swing that belongs to his first son. Free stuff? I agreed. Since my daughter didn't have any swing, and playgrounds with swing are hard to come by nowadays. He helped me carry up to the 3rd level, all the way to my doorsteps. I thanked him and asked if he's moving out? He shook his head, smile and walk away.
Since then, I rarely see him again.
One afternoon, my mum asked me if the couple was moving out because she saw people coming to the couple's home with cameras, taking pictures. I wondered.. maybe they are divorcing? That's why they sold the house? Then we found out that those people were investigators!!!!
The man had tried to kill his wife!
Maybe he's depressed and upset with his wife's lazy but demanding behaviour?
Till now we didn't know. Now, all we saw is the man's clothes hang dry outside, with his dog and his first son.
Just now, I saw him taking his son out to school/playgroup. He smiled at me before entering his car. I smiled back with fear, I walk as quick as I could.
So why did he tried to kill his wife? Are they still together? Can their marriage be saved?
(This is a true story about my neighbour, not some composition or essays)
